Following a 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people, including 37 football players on the Marshall University football team, the football program is in shambles and the entire community is grieving their loss. A new head coach named Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) is recruited the help rebuild the program along side assistant coach, Red Dawson (Matthew Fox), who happened to miss the doomed flight. Together, they turn a bunch of second-string and rookie players into a competitive team while helping them heal in the process.
